After a long but good day of traveling we arrived in Quito at 11 PM, 10 PM local time, on May 6 and have been busy ever since!
Yesterday we toured the city of Quito with our fantastic guide, Gloria, starting with a trip to Inti-Ñan. This is an out door museum about the equator and the indigenous of Ecuador. We participated in equator-related experiments showing the effects of gravity on the body in relation to the distance from the equator. Here we simply are standing with one foot in the northern hemisphere and the other in the southern:
It’s amazing how quickly Quito has expanded, the city is now 50 km long, and people reside both in the city and on steep slopes surrounding the city plateau. People come to the city from the countside In order to find work. Bit by bit these squatters improve their makeshift homes in order to secure title to the plot of land they’ve built upon.
